The literary works on Istanbul have been classified according to genres such as poems, stories, novels and essays. All these works are set in particular districts and neighborhoods of the city. These kinds of district-oriented masterpieces commenced in the mid-19th century. In addition to Çamlıca and Bosphorus, historical places such as Fatih and Aksaray and Beyoglu lying near the Goldern Horn came into prominence in these works. Some authors, however, chose to highlight the societal changes that were taking place in the mansions. Aside from genres like novels and stories, essays about the city emerged as a popular genre in Turkish literature.
