Anthology in the Turkish Literature

Anthology is the generic name given to compilations of the works of writers or artists formed with the aim of informing, accumulating/storing or simply for the the sake of aesthetics. Although the term was initially applied only in case of literary selections, in time, it came to cover compilations in different branches of art such as photography, music and paintings. However, it has been considered more in the light of a literary term in connection with especially poetry. The development of anthology as a literary genre coincides with the second half of the 19th century. It was during the westernization of our literature at this era that the functionalism of anthology was discovered and efforts were made to liberate it as a literary genre. Its enrichment in terms of subject diversity and the emergence of more objective and fulfilling works, however, were realized during the Republican Era.
