A Literature Review on the Process of Development of Science and Technology
This paper reviews the literature concerning the progress of science and technology in modern Turkey, using a conceptual framework developed specially for the purpose of this review and a bibliography collected again for the same purpose. The review shows that there are still some important research areas which have no place in the independent academic research institutions, such as in the universities and the other bodies that facilitate or coordinate research in Turkey. The significant body of the literature deals with the policy aspect of science and technology and on the progress of the specific scientific disciplines. This is largely because the commissioning of the research on these areas by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey and the Academy of Sciences of Turkey on the occasion of important anniversaries such as the 70th and 75th Anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Put it another way, history of science and technology in Turkey has been largely outside of the scope of mainstream research efforts.
