Sharh al-Mawaqif: The Last Great Classic of the Kalam Discipline

Sharh al-Mawaqif reflects the theoretical conception of Fakhr al-Din al-Razi and the verifying theologians (muhaqqiq) and philosophers who lived after him. Al-Jurjani's success is due to his transformation of al-Iji's al-Mawaqif into a classic representing the critical study of the common heritage of members of the universal disciplines using the method of inference. In this regard, Sharh al-Mawaqif constitutes a guide for the preceding period and a key for the subsequent. Thus Sharh al-Mawaqif professes to generate extensive solutions to problems that have emerged as a result of the critical studies of post-Razian thinkers. It may be considered the last greatest classic of the Razian tradition that has developed in the thirteenth century and beyond. To show the importance of this work, it is sufficient to say that it is nearly impossible for any work of theology or philosophy written after al-Jurjani to disregard Sharh al-Mawaqif, if it seeks to be identified with the Razi tradition.
