The Main Sources of Ottoman Traditional Islam: Creed and Catechism Sources

Addressing Ottoman Islam and putting it in context necessitates referencing sources from a broad range of scholarship. One such field is composed of ilmihal books, which convey information about the popular understanding of Islam. Another one is constituted by aqeedah books, which explain the Islamic belief system. To draw meaningful conclusions from a field that is largely deficient of secondary literature, it is best to start with a survey of all available works. In this context, this article aims to provide a list of textbooks emerging in parallel to the newly established schools. We will handle these books in a conceptual and historical context and proceed onto classifying them in different groups. We will also refer to the primary sources influencing the formation of these books either inside of the article or in footnotes.
