Western Approaches to Qur'anic Researchs and Its Effects on Turkey

The idea of Westernization that emerged in the Tanzimat Era has had an increasingly clear impact on Qur'anic studies. This trend is systematically applied on institutional and personal initiative in some faculties, foundations and academic journals. It has also become common in tafsir literature in Turkey since the 1980s. Scholars in Turkey are committed to the concepts and methods used in the translations of the works of Fazlur Rahman, Izutsu, Hasan Hanafi and Abu Zayd. Initially focused on the history and the language of the Qur'an, these works have later evolved towards language, culture and contextual approaches. These studies have also had an impact on the perception of the Qur'an and the epistemic field of tafsir in the Turkish academia.
