Tefsîrî Mehmed Efendi and His Tafsir

The tafsir of Terceme-i Tibyân was written by Muhammed b. Hamza el-Ayıntâbî ed-Debbâğ, also known as Tefsîrî Mehmed Efendi, upon the will of Mehmed IV. The Sultan wanted Ayıntâbî to translate the Qur’an into Turkish and in the meantime, to explain the secrets, unique truths, metaphors and graceful examples concealed therein. Ayıntâbî wrote the tafsir with quotations from Begavi’s, Razi’s and Beydavi’s commentaries along with some others. The tafsir of Tibyân, written in Turkish, was accessible to a larger audience and hence was copied and printed multiple times.
