Ruh al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Quran by İsmail Hakkı Bursevi

Isma’il Haqqi al-Burusawi was a prolific author, who left behind more than a hundred large and small works including his famous commentary on the Quran: Ruh al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Quran. Despite being brought up in a Sufi atmosphere, he was also well educated in exoteric Islamic sciences. He would join in the local public, share his knowledge and wisdom with them, and he never stopped preaching and giving advice to them. While he was writing his commentary on the Qur’an, Ruh al-Bayan, he also interpreted the Qur’an from beginning to end in his sermons from Bursa Ulucami (Grand Mosque) pulpit. Although Ruh al-Bayan is generally considered to be among the Sufi/ishari commentaries of the Qur’an, it carries most of the features of other types of the Qur’anic exegesis. As it benefited from many sources, especially from other books of Qur’anic exegesis and Sufism, and was successfully composed, it also became a reference for many studies. It has been published a number of times, summarized, translated into other languages, and become the subject of academic studies since the day it was written. Although it is criticized in some ways, such as for containing weak narrations, giving place to Israiliyyat and stories regardless of the degree of their accuracy, it has also received much attention especially in Sufi circles and has become an indispensable work for the preachers.
