Philosophical Societies from Ottoman until Today

Foundations, which can be defined as an organization in which several people voluntarily come together in accordance with a given objective, are indicative of a cultural and intellectual awakening. It is known that the foundation movements started in Europe soon after the scientific and cultural reforms. Such foundation movements observed in the West also redounded to the Ottomans, who were in the process of modernization. The number of philosophical and scientific societies as well as professional societies increased particularly in the Second Constitutional Era because of the legal facilities provided by the Associations Code established in 1909. This study discusses the philosophical societies and their impact from the Ottoman Era to the present and illustrates the institutionalization process of philosophy in Turkey.
