Writing the History of Modern Philosophy

Separated into two main parts, the first section of this study presents a limited archeology and a critical evaluation of Turkish philosophical tradition as it has been shaped through institutional activities at Darülfünun. This is combined with the first translations and writings on the history of philosophy produced before the Alphabet Revolution in 1928. Late Ottoman studies of the history of philosophy are evaluated in light of philosophical histories published either as serials in newspapers, journals, or books. The second part determines the main qualities of the historiography of philosophy in the Republican period. This is accomplished through an overview of general histories of philosophy penned between 1933-2010 and based upon the relationship between philosophy and the history of philosophy.
