Turgut Cansever and His PhD Thesis

This article deals with the doctoral dissertation, completed in 1949 by Turgut Cansever, an eminent Turkish thinker and architect and first in Turkey to prepare a PhD dissertation in art history. In this article, his decision-making process to prepare a doctoral dissertation in art history upon graduation from Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Architecture; the lectures he attended; the process of determining the subject-matter of his PhD dissertation; his relationship with Ernst Diez, his thesis advisor; and his research and study visits are examined in detail on the basis of the documents. In the meantime, the details as to the difficulties he faced with, and how his dissertation has been “ignored” by some circles are revealed. Last, but not least, the meaning and importance of his PhD dissertation is put forth.
