Mesnevi in Old Turkish Literature

Mathnawi or Mesnevî, in Eastern literature, is a name of poems written in internallay rhyming couplets but independent from the rest. Turksih mathnawi developed under the influence of Arabic Literature first, then Persian Literature later. There is no limit to the number of couplets. There are works written with 20-30 couplets, on the one hand with thousands of couplets on the other. The subjects can be heroic, romantic, didactic, moral ar mystical. In this study, mainly, the mathnawi- as literary genre - , history and internal structure of it, and the works written in this genre both in Turkey and abroad are examined in detail.
