The Prose in Old Turkish Literature

Classical Turkish Literature has yielded, besides poetry, various works in prose between fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. However, compared to prose, poetry keeps its place better in literary art. After the acceptance of Islam, beginning with fourteenth century, prose both in the Central Asia and Anatolia has given literary works of didactical nature in particular religous and ethical subjects. But then, throughout the centuries prose has improved subjectwise to cover biography, history, travel, story telling, letter writing etc. In style, plain, mediocre and artistic forms have been used according to the subject of prose and the style of authors. In this paper, starting with early works and presenting prose forms for each century, the development of prose has been examined; and at the end a bibliography has also given for the works involving this development.
