The Use of Temettuat Registers in Turkey

This article aims to discuss the use of temettuat registers in the Ottoman studies. Since the temettuat registers were opened for academic research in 1988, the number of studies that are based on these registers has increased enormously. The works of Professor Tevfik Güran have played pioneering role in this regard. The temettuat surveys were implemented within the geography where Tanzimat reforms were applied. Therefore, these registers include crucial information on the social and economic history of 19th century Ottoman Empire. Since the main purpose of these surveys were the reforms in taxation system; data concerning the local personalities, their wealth, annual revenues and the amount of money to be paid as tax, come to the forefront. This article includes a list of provincial temettuat registers and concludes with a detailed bibliography on studies based on temettuat registers.
